How to Claim Your Kerala Lottery Prize β€” Step-by-Step Guide

Won a prize? Here's what to do next β€” signing your ticket, where to claim by amount, the documents you need and how much is deducted.

Congratulations β€” your number came up! Getting from a winning ticket to money in your bank account takes a few careful steps. Follow this guide so your claim goes through without delays.

Step 1 β€” Check and sign your ticket

Compare every letter and digit of your ticket, including the series, with the official result. Then write your name and address and sign on the back of the ticket.

Step 2 β€” Find where to claim

Where you claim depends on the prize amount:

Prize amountWhere to claim
Up to β‚Ή5,000Any authorized lottery agent in Kerala
Above β‚Ή5,000, up to β‚Ή1 lakhDistrict Lottery Office
Above β‚Ή1 lakhDirectorate of State Lotteries, Thiruvananthapuram, or through a nationalized or scheduled bank

These limits are set by the Kerala State Lotteries Department and can change, so confirm them on the official claim form.

Step 3 β€” Keep your documents ready

  • The original winning ticket, signed on the back
  • The prize claim form, filled in and signed
  • Two passport-size photographs
  • Identity and address proof, such as Aadhaar
  • PAN card, needed for tax on larger prizes
  • Bank details β€” a passbook copy or cancelled cheque
  • A receipt with a revenue stamp, where the office asks for one

Step 4 β€” Understand the deductions

Two amounts are taken from a prize before it is paid:

  • Agent's commission β€” 10% of the prize goes to the agent who sold the winning ticket.
  • Income tax (TDS) β€” winnings above β‚Ή10,000 are taxed at 30% under Section 194B of the Income Tax Act, plus 4% health and education cess, for 31.2% in total. A surcharge is added for very large prizes.

For example, on a β‚Ή10 lakh prize the agent's commission is β‚Ή1 lakh, and tax at 31.2% on the remaining β‚Ή9 lakh is about β‚Ή2.81 lakh, so you would receive roughly β‚Ή6.19 lakh. Treat this as an estimate; the office will show the exact deductions.

Step 5 β€” Claim within 30 days

Submit your winning ticket within 30 days of the draw date. Late claims can be rejected, so don't wait until the last week.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Posting photos of a winning ticket on social media before you claim β€” it attracts scammers.
  • Paying anyone a "processing fee" to release a prize. Genuine prizes never need an upfront payment.
  • Handing your original ticket to someone who promises to claim it for you.
  • Signing anywhere other than the space on the back of the ticket.

After you're paid

  • Take your time before any big purchase.
  • Clear high-interest debt first.
  • Set aside an emergency fund.
  • Talk to a chartered accountant about tax and investments.
